It might be a little late for a reply being 2 months later but to answer your question.. it sounds like ick (someone correct me if im wrong) But medications shoulkd definately be halved if you have to use them but what helps cure besides meds would be raise the temperature to the mid to high 80's and to increase the salt content not to hight or you will kill the fish but i was told by another bgk owner that he put 2 tablespoons per 5 gal and it helped alot curing.. Its is tough with these fish to cure cause they are very sensitive to alot.. so if they do not dye they will be very week for a while Im sure at this point it is not helping you but hope maybe someone who takes a look at this will be helped.

Accutal its not he surived through it. ;D My uncle who works for fisheries manitoba gave me instruction on how to take care of him. this will work for any fish as well
1. Remover 2/3 of the water. 2. Wash very well or replace the filter catrige 3. run as many fillters as possilbe 4 soak after washing filter cartige in a contaner of hot water with small of amount medicaltion 5. Add back 2/3 of fresh water. 6.add medication 7. change filter cartrige, remove 2/3 of water and clean the gravel/ sand very very well. 8. remove all other fish if possible 9. remove all things that the fish can rub up on ( leave one or two things such as a log for the bKG to hide in so it not scared to death 10 repeat instructions till better.
this does work. but i worn you shop around looking for low medication prices it can be very expencive.
try different things fung cure worked for my ghost knife white spots. also some medication treat the same thing but u get more for less

Hey logan,
wow its great to hear your bgk made it mine might be goin through something i think i got it but just incase im gona take your advise and do a 2/3 water change... especialy since the nitrite is so high from all his previous tank mates i did a 50% on friday but it is still waaaaay to high he has lost color because of it so i am gona do 2/3 wich would be about 40 gallons little less but i just hope that he holds through it and it only makes him stronger.. how old is your bgk you should put some info in the thread under bgk and is there anyone out there let us know the set up.. again its good to here bout ur bgk..

He is mabe about two years old and 10 inches
so u r saying that ur bkg is white ? also buy some medication and use it remeber to clean the gravel as u r taking out the water do this every other day as with changing the filter cartige ( dont throw it away just wash it really well and soak it in a container of hot water with a little mediction)
i also recomed that u show the pet store guy a photo of what your BKG has . can u dicrbe what your BKG has?

Also i recomed buy some frozen foods such as plankton . for all BGKs and whole krill for larger ones (ask for whole because choped floats away and ur BKG does not get much, it comes in plates not cubes) while planton sinks to the bottom and stays in the cube form.
this is very high in protien and only costs about five buck for 3.5 Oz about 30 cubes. And the whole krill plates come in sizes bettween 5 OZ - 10 OZ

Hey yea the problem is my bgk is loseing something cause ever sinse his new tank mates he has lost color but only if the light is shining threw him if you are lokin at him in little light he looks completely normal he hasnt been acting diffrent either so i think it is just the water.. i did a 35 gal change wow its not easey but i will continue with it till i know he is ok.... theres realy no other way to explain it is his black color is fadeing it was happening to my pleco to so the nitrite is in better standing now much better and by next time it should be practicly 0... and the gravels sparkling clean now i will definately make sure to update everyone as to if the water quality was the reason or if its some type of problem..
