I have a 9" ghost in a tank with an anableps (4-eyed fish). Apparently the anableps is happiest in somewhat brackish water. Does anyone know if the ghost can tolerate a small amount of salt? thanks, dadzilla We've had our ghost for about 3 months or so. He's eaten out of hand since week 2.

I dont think ghost would appreciate any salt in the water due to their scale-less skin. I hope someone else can shine more upon this subject. BTW, how do you get your BGK to eat off your hand? I currently have 6' BGK.

I'm going to hold off adding any salt until I get a definitive answer on the BGK's tolerance for it. Our LFS, who are pretty good, put a little salt in all their freshwater tanks, including the one they keep ghosts in.

I have used salt in my tank that contains BGK's, loaches and other scaleless fish. I was told to only use half the recommended dosage for normal fish. I found that there was no adverse affects to any of my fish. However this is my experience and others may have differing experiences or opinions. I reckon that if you are going to add salt, do so gradually until half the normal dosage is achieved, sorry but I can't remember the recommended dosage. If you find any adverse affects while slowly adding to the dosage do a water change immediately. Also the thing to remember with salt is that it's levels will never reduce over time. That is to say that if you acheive the required amount for your tank and then do a water change being for instance 50 litres of tank water only add the amount required for that 50 litres that is replaced, don't add a full tanks requirement at any stage as it will only overdose the tank and kill everything in it if they are unable to tolerate it. Hope this helps. Cheers, Bryce.

Normal dosage of salt in a freshwater tank is one tablespoon per 5 gallons. I think that's what our LFS uses.

Sorry it took so long to reply but yes I have been told a similar dosage rate. As in our case as we use metric I was told to use 1 tablespoon per 20L for a tank with scaled fish and 1 tablespoon per 40L in a tank with scaleless fish. I have used this a few times but not consistently but never noticed any adverse affects with the fish Hope this helps. Cheers, bryce.

I've been told that 1tbspoon to 20 lts is fine with a BGK as long as it's introduced over a period of time. I've done it with no sign of distress from my BGK. How it would affect the BGK in the long term is unknown to me though.
