Yeah I'm here. I joined this forum a week ago and I had my question answered...but I'm sad to see little activity. I've had my BGK for about 6 months now and he is about 4-5 inches long. His name is Chess. It's so fun to sit and watch him swim around. Every night when I get home from work it's feeding time and he is not shy to come out and gobble up the the frozen brime shrimp. He'll even swim up the the top of the tank to eat it like my tetras and pink kissers do!

I have my BGK in a 55 gallon tank also. I have a light side of the tank w/ brighter colors and bright gravel, then I have almost a line down the middle where the other half of the tank is all black and white. My BGK comes out often and I have even hand fed him and had him brush up on my fingers. The other fish I have with my BGK are about 4 different types of tetras totaling 14 in all. I also have 4 guppies which are always popping out live babies...giving the tank mates lots of live food. I have 3 Pink Kissers, 2 cory cats, 2 postumas (or however you spell the sucker cleaner type fish), a dwarf frog who is always pissing off my BGK, and 5 snails. There is so much entertainment in my aquarium and I havn't had any fish die in the 7 months I've had the tank. I throw in some ghost shrimp every now in then for my BGK to eat...I'll get 6 usually at a time and by morning they are gone. Eventually when my Pink Kissers get larger and my BGK get's larger, I'll buy a larger tank. But the 55 gallon will be more than enough for quite a long time.

Hi Guys,
It's good to see some activity at this site. I check to see what's been happening every couple of weeks, but not much out there. I felt I just had to talk about my BGK, Ebony, and was happy to see some life today.
I got Ebony close to 3 months ago and she(?) was about 7cm (2.75"). She lives with 4 neon tetras as well as 2 rummy nose, 3 harlequins, 2 congos, 2 rainbowfish, 4 rosy barbs, 1 angel, 1 whiptail cat 1 bristlenose and a female kribensis in my tank and I was worried that she'd decide to eat tetras when she was big enough. I decided then that I should hand feed her well and hopefully she'd leave the others alone. I'm not sure how successful this has been as small fish disappear from time to time (I started with schools of 7 each), but this may not be Ebony's fault. She is a great fish, who comes out whenever someone is near the tank and swims across the front looking for a treat. She will eat a variety of food from frozen brine shrimp; Blood Worm (her favourite) either freeze dried or frozen; river shrimp; daphnea; beef heart and most anything I put in there. I was very worried that she would be finiky and only eat frozen foods, but she isn't fussy at all - which is great as it makes it easier to go away on holidays and have some one else look after the tank.
She has doubled in size since I got her. She's putting the pressure on me to upgrade my tank as I've only got a 2' tank and was planning to get a 4' bay front tank. I hope this will be large enough for her.
Anyway I just wanted to rave about the best fish ;D in my tank to other like minded people - no one else around me has that much interest in my fish.

Hi Steve & Others,
I've always liked a well stocked tank. I prefer to have lots of little fish and a few bigger ones. (Which probably means I'll end up replacing little ones if Ebony decides that they are yummy - I'll have to see how it all goes) I will be getting rid of the barbs at some stage, as they were only feeders to start the tank after it was all but wiped out a few months ago. The angel (Grace, who belongs to my daughter) and my bristle nose were the only ones to survive. I'm also going to trade in the Checkered Rainbow fish for some Dwarf neon rainbows, as the inexperienced sales person at the lfs sold me the wrong ones, and they are just a bit big for the tank.
The tank is fairly heavily planted with 3 standard val, 2 spiral val, 1 sort of rush, 1 ocelot sward, a dwarf(?) anubias, some type of grass and 1 other plant I don't know the name of. Oh yeh and lots of java moss covering a large piece of drift wood and a teracotta pipe ornament. I think this helps a lot to keep the tank in balance.
Just waiting for my tax refund so I can run out and buy the new tank - hanging out badly for that. Anyway that's all for now. I'll keep you posted as to how it's all going.
Cheers, DebbieK

We got some nice conversation going!
::yawn:: I just got home from work and dropped some frozen brime shrimp in the tank. All the fish are so spoiled and barely bat a fin at the flake food...they all want the brime shrimp. Stevo...looking for other fish to put in the tank I suggest a bunch of tetras cause they give you something to look at in the tank...and colors...they are also always moving and animated. The dwarf frogs are kid of fun to watch also...they seem so dumb. My dwarf frog will swim to the top of the tank real slow and as soon as he hits the top he shoots down like a bullet ramming his face into the gravel and kicks around for a bit like he just got shocked by something...it's crazy. I also enjoy my pink kissers. I have 2 males and a female. That is what you need to really enjoy them...the two males will fight over the female and while they do so they lock lips and it looks like they are kissing...thus the name. It is a harmless activity they partake in but kind of neat to watch. They get fairly large too...12 inches. Mine are about 2-3 inches right now. Where are you two from? I'm in Flint, Michigan!

i think i am goin to try the tetras whats good i guess a school of 10 or so? the frog sounds kool i see them all the time at the lfs im always temped but dont know how the bgk will get along with it.. i went home and droped some blood worms in all my fish love them so i put a desent amount in but the bgk gets his own little clump hes a hungry little fella.. right now my clown loaches have only been in the tank a week so im just tryin to make sure they eat.. i really want to get a second bgk.. another baby. you guys thing a 55 is two smal for two bgks? every time i see mine out i get excited he looks so silky by far the best fish.. i cant wait till he gets biger.. he likes swimming backward alot then after he scans something he quikly turns around and goes face to face with it.. i probably stare at him for a good 45 min before work then after work as well.. Im from Dumont newjersey theres not many bgk lovers in my area either but i wonder ware do the ones in the pet stores go to then.. how many of the bgks actualy get to a home and live there life.. i have been tryin to get a picture of my bgk but he never wants to poses he moves so qiuk and smoothly its amazing..

NO! You do not want to put two BGKs in the same tank. Just because you love them doesn't mean you have to jeprodize the one you got. If you read up on them online it strongly reccommends that you don't mix your BGK with another BGK or any other knife fish for that matter. Sure...if you had like a 125 gallon tank or larger you'd be fine but I'd never mix them period and definatly not in a 55 gallon tank. Just enjoy the one you have...he will loosen up after time and continue to give you hours or enjoyment for years to come!

I have read up with everyone alot of people saying u shouldnt have two together but then in this forum i read that it is perfectly fine.. the people on at this forum speak form experience as the others speak from books.. i think it realy depends on your bgks personality i think with mine a 55g is two smal to put another one in he loves beign king of the tank.. but i think that if you get two bgks with a lees aresive personality i think they would be ok.. i remember readign a lady saying she had 4 in a 75g.. i think in a couple days i will either get 3 or 4 more big fish ( such as the kissing fish) or a school of tetras or platys.. my gerlfriend is in love with platys im not sure why... but i think i want 2 go for the tetras.. But in one of the threads here they all seam to agree it to be ok.. i wont take any chances though .. wow i was feeding him this morning and he seams to be even picky as to what type of blood worms i get him.. (both frozen) but usualy he tares the clump apart gion at everything with this type he kinda just picks at.. so i got suspisios aand gave him a thing of the old ones and he tore into it again then this morning i gave him the new kind and he just picks at it.. anyone else getting any new fish soon? or anychanges?

Well i decided on the platys for now i got blue spoted ones and gold wagtail 5 of each.. but next will be another middle size prob 2 or 3 and maybe even 4.. i figured the platys will add alitle more color then the tetras.. i have decided on a name for my bgk and it is ivory. i know doesnt realy fit the apeirence but i like it that way..

Hi Steveo,
I think you might have read Carraig's post "new tank" in this section. He mentions the D-Deltec Dusk till Dawn. I looked it up on the net read all about and drooled. It's on my wish list, but for now I'll settle for getting a larger tank - soon. Carraig is in the UK so I'm not sure what the distribution of the Dusk till Dawn is like - you might want to check it out.
Nothing more to report about Ebony and the rest of her tank mates. Everyone is happy swimming around in their little home - I haven't lost any neons for a while so that's always a bonus. I'm looking at geting a couple of SAE's as I've discovered a bit of "Hair" algae (or what ever you want to call it) growing on some of my plants. The SAE's are supposed to be good at cleaning that up.
That's about all for now.
Oh Eckocrombie, in answer to your question, I'm located in Melbourne, Australia.
Cheers for now, DebbieK
